About Hawaiian Trades Academy

Hawaiian Trades Academy (HTA), established in 2019, aims to elevate household incomes in Hawai'i by providing access to trades-training programs. These programs lead to successful career paths with livable wages. HTA offers accelerated classes, typically spanning 3-14 weeks, that include skills training by industry professionals, Native Hawaiian cultural enrichment, financial empowerment, and job readiness. The academy has delivered over 45 academies across Kaua'i, Maui, Moloka'i, and O'ahu, serving over 1,000 students in areas like Carpentry, Craftsmanship, CDL-A Licensing, Fire Exam Prep, Police Exam Prep, Solar Energy, and Safety Health & Training. HTA partners with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) and other organizations to provide training and certifications for vocational jobs, facilitating a smooth transition into high-paying jobs. HTA's programs incorporate hands-on learning and industry-certified curriculum to prepare students for employment in various trades. For example, the Solar Energy Program equips students with the foundational knowledge of photovoltaics and OSHA-10 certification. The Carpentry Program offers hands-on opportunities to learn skills necessary for entry-level carpentry positions and provides trade certifications such as OSHA-10, Respiratory, or First Aid. HTA also seeks community feedback to stay informed of immediate workforce needs and plan for new programs. Graduates of Hawaiian Trades Academy have expressed increased confidence and preparedness for their careers. One graduate of the solar program felt confident in working on roofs installing solar panels, while another shared how the program provided hope and opportunities for Native Hawaiian and local communities after a job loss due to COVID. HTA's CDL-A program even launched an all-female cohort (Wahine Cohort) in partnership with the American Association of University Women, demonstrating its commitment to diversity and inclusion. The program includes theory, simulator, and behind-the-wheel training, along with cultural, financial, and job-readiness education. HTA's approach combines hands-on skills with cultural and financial education, making it a unique and valuable resource for individuals seeking to enter or advance in the trades. The academy's focus on community needs and partnerships with industry professionals ensures that its programs remain relevant and effective in preparing students for successful careers.
