About Methodist Hospital Driver Rehabilitation Program
The Methodist Hospital Driver Rehabilitation Program offers specialized evaluation, driver training, and vehicle modification recommendations to help individuals get back in the driver's seat or determine if continued driving is appropriate. The program is designed for new drivers needing extra training, experienced drivers facing age-related challenges or medical events, and those recovering from injuries needing adaptive equipment. Therapists are experienced in working with drivers who have experienced a variety of conditions, including ADD/ADHD, aging, anxiety, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, developmental disorders, limb amputation, other physical or orthopedic impairment, stroke or other neurological conditions, and vision impairment. The program includes a clinical evaluation to assess physical, cognitive, perceptual, and visual abilities, as well as a behind-the-wheel evaluation in various traffic settings, with adaptive equipment available if needed. Recommendations are made the day of the evaluation, and further training is provided if adaptive devices are recommended. The program is certified by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, and therapists are members of The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED). Methodist's Driver Rehabilitation Program aims to help clients safely return to driving or remain behind the wheel. The program provides one-on-one training with specialized equipment to build confidence and independence. The program also offers vehicle modification recommendations, such as hand controls, specialized mirrors, and reduced effort steering.
